The WETATi Academy Community Open House on April 26, 2023 was an evening filled with reflections from students and expectations from leaders that will elevate and expand the organization’s work to offer students economic empowerment through equitable access to employment and job creation.
As guests entered the event space at the Woodmore Country Club, a presenting partner, they were greeted by students dressed in their WETATi Academy t-shirts and smiles. There was also an area with information about food, health and finance.
After mixing and mingling, the program opened by the emcees, Lucretia Freeman-Buster and Richard Ojuri. Opening remarks by Founder and Executive Director Ambassador Dr. Margaret Dureke set the tone for an evening of purpose and fellowship. Throughout the program, guests were greeted by WETATi students and educational program partners, members of the Board of Directors, event sponsors and strategic partners, and staff.
The students, from College Park Academy, University of Maryland College Park, and Prince George’s Community College, shared the impact WETATi Academy has on their academic and entrepreneurial goals. Other highlights included greetings and messages of support from Tim Adams (SA-TECH, Inc.), Anne Reese Carswell (Nyumburu Cultural Center), Maryland State Treasurer Dereck E. Davis, Councilmember Eric Olson (District 3), and Councilmember Vice Chair Wala Blegay (District 6).
The Community Open House was successful because of the support of the following companies: SA-TECH, Kaiser Permanente, Truist, The Country Club at Woodmore, Nyumburu Cultural Center at the University of Maryland College Park, Margaret Speaks, Lamb Consulting, Wegmans, Dat Jerk, Fulton Bank, and Jollof Etcetera.
